Video Lottery Terminals Linked To Gambling Addiction In Women

>Video lottery terminals have become a popular form of gambling over the past decade throughout the world. Now, it appears that the VLTs are one of the main forms of gambling addiction among women.
A study done by researchers at the University of Manitoba revealed that playing VLTs had the highest odds of gambling addiction among Canadian women that were part of the study. That study has prompted the researchers to call for the elimination of video lottery terminals.
"VLTs generate the largest profits, compared with other types of gambling," said Lead Researcher Tracie Afifi, as reported in the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry, "But we are hopeful that people realize that there is an important need to reduce problem gambling because its a very important public health and community health issue."
The complete elimination of the machines would be nearly impossible because of the money they generate, but the study did give several other alternatives to help curb gambling addictions in women.
One suggestion was to limit the amount of time that the machines could be in operation. That would cut down on the number of people playing the machines.
Another possible solution would be to raise awareness of the dangers that are associated with playing the machines. Along with the awareness, prevention programs could be put in place to help women who have gambling problems.
