Pennsylvania lawmakers have not been shy is showing the rest of the Northeast that they are here to stay in the battle for gambling revenue in the region. This week, figures were released that once again indicate that Pennsylvania is an up and coming threat in the casino industry.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has released the revenue numbers for January, and casinos in the state can once again take pride in the results. Revenue was up almost ten percent, with the new Rivers Casino being a driving force behind those numbers.

In January, casinos in Pennsylvania brought in $184.2 million. That compared favorably to the $132.3 million that the state's casinos had in January of 2009. The figures were also helped by improved economic conditions.

Last year, the state was dealing with an economic recession that had revenue figures down in almost all areas of the US. Las Vegas and Atlantic City, the two largest gambling destinations in the country had their casinos fighting to stay above water.

Pennsylvania, meanwhile, was expanding their casino options. The Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh had just been built, and lawmakers started the process of adding table games to state casinos. The table game legislation was completed this year, and casinos are hoping the games are up and running by the summer.

There are other areas of the Northeast that are also expanding their casinos. New York has finally chosen a developer for a casino at their famous Aqueduct racetrack, and Delaware has been busy adding gambling options for their residents.
